ancient art of magic

Article Contributor: Magician Mike Guistolise

This quick guide will provide you with some helpful magical tips to benefit a novice in becoming a king of marvels. To present magic in it’s best form, one has to learn the key stages first in order to perform magical tricks naturally and confidently.

The art of magic is not difficult to learn if one has chosen the appropriate learning materials. Amateurs often fail to create the all-important magical feeling in early performances. With the right magical touch, magicians can leave the audience both puzzled and amazed. A good artistic presentation is sure to get an enthusiastic round of applause.

The first stage for beginners learning magic is to manually memorize the magic trick. This complete refinement will help the magic to come automatically and for the act to look polished and natural. A beginning magician should have playing cards and coins readily available to make a commendable introduction to the world of magic. You can easily master a number of spectacular tricks with these basic aids.  Modern magic tricks with a coin can quickly become some of your flawless ruses. Also master a few card tricks to add to your act. Manually practice with your cards to look like a professional.

Your magic act will never be entertaining if it’s not accompanied by an enchanting presentation. A good performance requires more than just the manual tricks, it should be an entertaining form of art. Also, a trick can only be made to look natural if the magician amplifies his or her natural personal strengths in it. For example, a magician should not attempt to act funny if he isn’t naturally funny. It will detract the audience’s attention to the strained effort to act comical and will most certainly ruin the magical elements that you are trying to enhance.

This writer, as an experienced magician that is very confident performing magic acts that look believable, I strongly suggest to beginners to become confident in whatever magical trick you are going to show off. A magician that trusts himself can in point of fact make the audience trust him and his magical wonders.

China sketch

China as one of the four ancient civilizations of the world has a very long history. The mention of China first brings to mind and image of the 2,300-year-old Great Wall which can even be seen from space. Certainly, this is not the only thing to see and there is plenty more to see and do in the People’s Republic of China.

China is the largest country in the world by population and the third largest in the world by size. The country of China has an area coverage of 9,596,960 square kilometers. This also makes it the largest country on the Asia continent. China has one the oldest civilizations in the world with China’s most spoken language Mandarin, also one the oldest spoken languages of the world. China with it’s large population, makes Mandarin the most spoken language in the world.  China has also advanced considerably over the years, both technologically and economically. With China’s hefty influence, the whole of East Asia has adopted Chinese culture, religion and developed similar writing methods.

It surely sounds interesting, but before you book your trip to China, you need to know more about the climate and choose which places to visit. Travelling in China is moderately easy. The country is very tourist friendly and the government firmly believes in their Harmonious Society policy for it’s citizens and the foreign visitors.

As a tourist you can expect to be well looked after. You can visit China in any season, but the winters in some parts of China tend to be very cold, so summer is preferable. The climate in Beijing is comparable to Washington DC.

And now, the places in China that you won’t want to miss. Here’s our short list of top attractions;

Beijing is the one place which is a must see. It is here that you will get the flavor of the country’s politics and culture, intermingled with the now modern city. Beijing is always crammed with activities to do. The best places to visit here are the Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, Ming Tomb, Summer Palace, Lama Temple and the Capital Museum. Another reason not to miss out on Beijing is that it is one of the six oldest cities in the country and likewise, in the world. You could stay at the Orange Hotel or Michael’s House Hotel while you are there.

Shanghai is another of China’s ancient cities. It is also the largest city and has two sections; Puxi in the center and Pudong across from the historic center. If you visit Shanghai, you must see the Shanghai Bund, the Jade Buddha temple, Shanghai Yuyuan Garden, and the Shanghai Museum. Pudong Shangri-La and St. Regis, Shanghai are good options for accommodations.

The city of Guilin is located by the banks of the Li River and is known for its scenic locations. The landscape is flanked by mountains with rock climbing zones, crystal clear water bodies and caves to explore. Here you have the opportunity to visit the Chinese tribes of Hui, Yao and Zhuang. Other notable places to visit are the reed flute cave, the elephant trunk hill, the 7-star parks and the famed Guilin Folded brocade hill. Eva Inn is a renowned place to stay in here.

If you do see the Yangtze River, you should not pass up the opportunity for a river cruise. The ferry across the river is said to be one of the most romantic things you can do on this trip. It is a wonderful, but long ride on the along the river. The ride is 6,300 km and only the Amazon River and the Nile are longer.

Lhasa, Tibet is the closest you can come to heaven on your visit to China and Tibet. Nestled between the Himalayas, it is a civilization far removed from the everyday hustle and bustle that we are accustomed to. While in Lhasa,  you must see the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple, plus the Drepung and Sera Monasteries. The House of Shambala and Thangka Hotel are good places to put your feet up.

Also, while in the historical Tsang province of Tibet, you should make it a point to visit Shigatse, as it is the second largest city in the province.

traditional Chinese medicine

Article Contributor: Donald Saunders

Starting in the mid-twentieth century, western countries started to use Chinese traditional medicine which had been practiced for thousands of years in China. Today this traditional Chinese medicine is considered as a natural treatment for insomnia.

In the 1950’s China began referring to their ancient medicine as traditional Chinese medicine as they were establishing an export business for their time-honored practices and medicines. Today, we have the modern practice of traditional Chinese medicine for treating insomnia naturally.

In modern times, traditional Chinese medicine encompasses more than medicinal products, but also includes herbal preparations and a variety of practices such as acupuncture and massage techniques. The basic principle of Chinese medicine is that the human body functions as the result of a number of interrelated processes which are in constant interaction with our environment. Keeping these human body functions in balance will keep your body healthy. And if these body processes don’t have a copasetic relationship, a person’s health will suffer.

The theory of Yin-Yan and several other philosophies govern the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. The role of five elements (earth, water, fire, wood and metal) and the flow of energy through the meridians of the body plus the interaction between the organs of the body are addressed by Yin-Yan.

The conflict of those who believe in science based western medicine and those who follow traditional Chinese medicine has gone on for many years. Today however, the acceptance of this and other alternative medicines is increasingly being accepted.

For thousands and perhaps millions of insomnia sufferers, herbal remedies such as chamomile, lavender, lemon balm and passion flower have long been known for their medicinal abilities for relieving insomnia. I imagine there are few insomnia sufferers that have not at least attempted a drink of hot honey with lemon balm before retiring for the evening.

Increasingly, people are also turning to acupuncture or for those with a touch of trypanophobia, acupressure to relieve symptoms. Both arts have been practiced for centuries and the principles were born out of the traditional Chinese practice of adjusting the energy within the body by controlling its flow along the meridian lines.

Traditional Chinese medicine has a growing acceptance, but there are still many people in the west that are skeptical. Today, many fortunate people have experienced these medical remedies from the Far East and will certainly vouch for it’s effectiveness. If you suffer from insomnia, I highly recommend seriously considering some of the above-mentioned traditional remedies from China.

Kid's Magic Show

Article Contributor: Michael Ricketts (Magic Mike)

The key to becoming a successful kid’s magician and making it your main source of income is continuous audience participation and eye-catching props. Your show will need to be fast paced, varied, and exciting to keep the children entertained.

Magic as a form of kid’s entertainment is both enjoyable and rewarding. Whether you are a parent performing in front of your child at their birthday party or a professional magician, magic has become a big part of the kid’s entertainment world.

Performing magic for children differs from closeup magic or sleight-of-hand. It’s closer to traditional stage magic with visual illusions that hold the audience’s attention. When planning to be your kid’s magician, it is important to keep in mind that children have a shorter attention span, thus you have to keep them laughing by using visual props (like magic wands, colorful tricks and so on), funny jokes and audience participation. Magic illusions must be varied, exciting and entertaining for all children.

The tricks you choose for your magic show are vital and you must pick tricks for kids that are appropriate for their gender and age. Before you perform any kids magic show, watch a children’s TV show and observe how the presenters act. They laugh, smile and appear to be having fun themselves and this is a significant part of having a successful magic act. Take note of some of the character’s names as these will be popular names that you can use in your own show (names of your rabbit or doves for example).

To be a successful and popular magician for kids, you have to enjoy performing and demonstrate good magic tricks. The kids in your audience know you are enjoying it and your positive feelings will make the audience feel entertained. There’s nothing worse to watch, than magic performed by a bored kid’s magician.

A best practice to improve your chances of repeat performances, is to award the children with prizes. A skillfully made balloon animal is good, but when it pops, you are quickly forgotten. In additional to balloons, giving kids a few promotional items with your logo will give parents one way to contact you for their kid’s next party.

Mentalist Magic

Article Contributor: Corey M. Martin

Few men can claim they have risen to the top through violating other peoples’ privacy, but with Gerry McCambridge this is expected! After honing his skills for decades, Gerry can easily be considered one of the longest running and most experienced mind reading entertainers on the planet. You are likely wondering, how did he become so skilled at piercing people’s inner thoughts. He started very young as the child of detective in New York City. Without a doubt, he has learned a trick or two from his master of interrogation father. But how did he manage to take it as far as becoming the longest running Mentalist in Las Vegas history?

Gerry McCambridge could be found headlining at clubs across the USA as “The Mentalist”. With his mind intuitive abilities, he was not exactly a magician, but an entirely new category. Becoming a huge hit thanks to some master observational skills (remember Dad was a NYPD detective), Gerry continued his brilliant show, performing for corporate events and gatherings. He wowed audiences with his comedic approach to his mind readings. As he continued to appear on radio and talk shows across the country, more and more became interested in the enigma that was “The Mentalist”. In 1999 Gerry was awarded by the International Magicians Society, the first ever Merlin award for mentalism to honor his major contributions to entertainment within his field. Gerry struck gold in 2004 with his own hit 1-hour TV special, drawing in millions of worldwide viewers. Also, in 2004 Gerry started performing his Off-Broadway 1 man show which received critical acclaim.

Capitalizing on the success of his 1 man show in New York City, he took it across the country. His expanded show was a huge sensation. Gerry performed consecutive shows to roaring crowds, developing a new public desire for his masterful antics of mentalism. After 3 years, The Mentalist performed a special 500th show in Las Vegas. The Hooters Las Vegas Hotel awarded him an extra year onto his contract. He was also given a rare one-of-a-kind Rolex watch. Later that year, TV producers contacted Gerry with the interest of turning his idea of mentalism into a crime fighting television series. CBS’s ‘The Mentalist’ had a very successful run of 7 seasons. Today, Gerry McCambridge has been headlining for overs 15 years in Las Vegas at the Planet Hollywood Casino.
